Once you arrive to Jekyll Island, the first and most remarkable attraction is the National Historic Landmark District, the result of the activity in the late 1880s when a descendant of an earlier French aristocrat settler and a group of wealthy industrialists chose Jekyll Island as their private winter retreat.

The Jekyll Island Club was secluded and socially restricted elite membership facility for a long 56 years, until the State purchased the property that today is an affordable world-class resort, and focal point of this district. The original club was enough to accommodate 100 guests and member were encouraged to stay at the clubhouse.

However, most of those millionaires built their own mansion-sized cottages around the club. There are currently more than 30 of those original cottages, open to the public, and preserving most of their original furniture and arrangements, remaining as one of its kind attractions.

All visitors stop first at Jekyll Island's History Center, depicting the Island's history. Once there, you can purchase souvenirs, tickets for tours of the National Historic Landmark District, and obtain free brochures, maps and travel planners.

Due to the size of the island, it is easy to figure out that all tours depart from the Island History Center, from where carriage and tram tours can be prearranged with step-on-guides, or scheduling the attraction to your preference.

In sports and recreation, Jekyll Island has no rival as one of the largest public golf resorts in the state of Georgia, but also recognized as a Tennis resort. One of the best examples of this kind of attractions is the Jekyll Island Tennis Center, a premier facility on the East Coast featuring 13 clay courts, one with grandstands and 7-lighted courts.

Attractions at Jekyll are as varied as the activities performed on them, such as tournaments, summer tennis and golf camps, fishing, sailing, golf, tennis lessons and many other activities available for all ages and skill levels.

Of remarkable interest are the two 18-hole miniature golf, and the nature tours, including beach and marsh exploration, as well as bird watching. The intra-coastal waters of Jekyll Island are unrivaled for fishing and there are many attractions involving this activity, such as a 31-foot Bombay Clipper available for touring.

Summer Waves Water Park is an interesting summer attraction open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, featuring 11 acres of leisure and fun. Nearby, the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex and the Tidelands Nature Center are places you will not want to miss.
